If you are in the poultry industry, you will most likely have heard of the term “Point of lay”, especially in relation to the buying and selling of hens. So what does it mean?

The “point of lay” simply refers to a hen that has matured to the point where they should start or should be starting to lay eggs.

A good laying breed of chicken will generally hit the point of lay between the ages of 16 weeks and 20 weeks old. However, there will always be the odd individual chickens that will start laying eggs either much earlier or much later after the point of lay age.

Many chicken producers in the Philippines and across the world will market their young hens or pullets as “point of lay” when in fact the chickens are still a few weeks away from starting to lay eggs. It is a dishonest marketing gimmick and producers use it because most buyers looking for point of lay chickens are generally impatient and can’t wait for their hens to begin laying eggs.

Because of this, don’t always expect the “point of lay” chickens that you recently purchased to begin laying eggs immediately.

There are numerous advantages of buying point of lay chickens. For one, you begin getting the eggs as early as possible without the long wait for the hens to start laying eggs after months of feeding. Buying point of lay chickens also means that you will spend less money in feeding costs until the chicken has hit the age of maturity. Because the birds will start laying as soon as you have purchased them(that is if they really are point of lay), the birds will begin earning their keep as soon as they enter your premises.

When a poultry breeder is selling point of lay chickens, that may mean any of the following:-

• The chicken has reached the right egg laying age for its breed. The time when a hen will start laying eggs will vary from 3 months to 6 months depending on the breed. ISA Brown breeds of layers will start laying eggs between the ages of 3 and 4 months. Native chickens generally take longer with some beginning to lay eggs at the age of 5 or 6 months.

• The breeder has done physical checks on the hens they are selling and determined that they are now ready to lay eggs. Physical inspection generally involves chickeming if the pelvis bones of the hen have separated.
