Megaworld conquers Spain: Andrew Tan opens mall in Madrid
Ultra bilyonaryo Andrew Tan is set on expanding Megaworld’s corporate footprint overseas, with Spain being his first target.
The Megaworld chairman led the opening of Caleido Mall over the weekend, which towers over the European city with 36 floors and a sleek, glinting finish.
Tan’s Emperador Properties partnered with Spanish holding firm Grupo Villar Mir for the project, which is his first mall and township project outside the Philippines.
ALT also owns this 57-storey Torre Emperador Castellana, formerly called Torre Espacio in Madrid just within the area where Caleido is.
“Caleido is envisioned to rise as an architectural masterpiece at the very heart of Madrid’s most vibrant financial district,” Tan said in his opening speech, calling the complex a “breath of fresh air” in the area.
A line formed outside the mall complex as residents were curious to see the newest attraction in their area, which promises to be a one-stop shop for errands, culture, and art.
At the heart of the mall is a lush open park surrounded by shops, restaurants, cinemas, and a grocery store, while an adjacent subway station and bus stops are being constructed for ease of access.
This Torre Diagonal is also owned by ALT, but this one is in Barcelona.
Tan is also working with Spanish school IE University and medical firm Quironsalud to occupy the rest of the space, the latter focused on sports medicine.
The bilyonaryo also owns Torre Emperador Castellana in the surrounding area, and Torre Diagonal in Barcelona.
