DOTr awards $1.87B worth of contracts for North-South railway project
The Department of Transportation has awarded four civil works contracts amounting to $1.87 billion for the South Commuter Railway Project (SCRP) funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The first four contract packages include the construction of 31.5 kilometers of railway viaducts, nine elevated stations and one railway depot covering the Muntinlupa to Calamba portion of SCRP.
The SCRP system will have 18 stations traversing Manila, Makati, Taguig, Paranaque, Muntinlupa, San Pedro, Binan, Santa Rosa, Cabuyao and Calamba.
The project is expected to cut travel time between Manila and Calamba from 2.5 hours to an hour.
The remaining civil works contract packages will be awarded soon and will cover the Manila (Blumentritt) to Muntinlupa portion of the project.
Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said the $15.8 billion NSCRP would elevate the country’s transportation system to global standards and create 110,000 direct and indirect jobs.
“This railway will offer safe, affordable, convenient, and comfortable transport to Filipinos, while accelerating the country’s economic rebound,” he said.
The project represents ADB’s biggest infrastructure investment.
