  • Covid fuels e-commerce in PH

The coronavirus pandemic has accelerated the adoption of electronic commerce (e-commerce) in the Philippines, a government official said on Monday.

“We know the increased adoption of e-commerce over the past year. Our records will show that more and more people are getting into the online business,” said Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez during the Sulong Pilipinas 2021: Partners for Progress, A Pre-State of the Nation Address (SONA) Economic Development and Infrastructure Clusters Forum held virtually on Monday.

Citing data from the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Business Name Registration System (BNRS), Lopez reported there were 86,726 business names registered for online
businesses from April to December last year.

This was higher than the 1,848 business names registered for online businesses in March 2020 prior to the pandemic.

Lopez also said online business name registration more than tripled to 381 percent in the first quarter of 2021.

“Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) accelerated the adoption of e-commerce and facilitated the digital transformation of businesses and government,” said the Trade chief.

In the same virtual event, Lopez laid out the government’s digitalization efforts.

Lopez said the launching of the Phase 1 the Central Business Portal (CBP) reduced not only the forms and documentary requirements but also shortened the processing time with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) to at most three to four days form over 10 days.

It also made employee reporting to Social Security System (SSS), Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG Fund), and Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) easier.

“The pilot phase of the CBP linked the business permit processes of QC (Quezon City) and 17 cities and municipalities,” Lopez said.

Phase 2 of the CBP is underway and will further expand the coverage to integrate the registration with other agencies. “By the end of the year, we look forward to a Central Business Portal that is a game changer,” Lopez said.

Phase 1 of the CBP covers the corporations registering with the SEC and BIR.

Conversely, Phase 2 of the CBP will incorporate the Philippine business number that will serve as a unique business identification, which can be used in transacting with any government agency.

Citing a report from the Department of Information and Communications Technology, Lopez said a total of 187 agencies already have active information systems strategic plans but there are many other agencies that are automating their business process.

Such digitalization efforts form part of President Rodrigo Duterte’s socioeconomic agenda aimed at increasing competitiveness and ease of doing business, as well as promoting promote science, technology and innovation.
