New Clark City Stadium
New Clark City Stadium
New Clark City Stadium is located in Tarlac, Philippines which is about 120 kilometers away from Manila. This Stadium is the only IAAF certified athletics stadium in the Philippines & central hub of the 30th SEA games in November. Aimed at the rebirth of Philippine sports, the New Clark City Government Administrative Centre has a vision to cultivate a sports city in the heart of New Clark City. New Clark City Stadium is a 20,000-seater capacity athletics stadium ready for the 30th Southeast Asian Games 2019. The Philippine Sports Commission revealed their plans to build this sports hub at New Clark City after Filipino weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz clinched the silver medal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Reportedly now 97% complete, the stadium features a unique design inspired by Mount Pinatubo. What makes this facility really stand out is the volcano debris from Mount Pinatubo itself that comprises the stadium’s posts and façade. The ringed roof is specially designed to resemble a volcanic crater, while glass frames adorn the main entrance of the stadium. Time may be tight to complete this entire sports facility by November 2019, but some 4,000 employees are now working on it to make the impossible happen. Apart from the stadium itself, there is also an aquatics centre that seats 2,000. The aquatics centre got its design from the parol, a Filipino Christmas lantern. By day, the special fibreglass roof of the aquatics centre resembles capiz windows in old Philippine houses, while by night, the roof reminds one of a lit parol. Part of the aquatics centre’s special architecture is the idea of it being sheltered, yet still featuring natural light.
